中脳は、発生中の脊索動物の脳の3つの一次区分のうち中央の区分、または成体の脳でこれに対応する部分である（脊椎動物では、大脳脚を含む腹側部と、四丘体を含み、第3脳室と第4脳室を連絡するSylvius水道を囲む背側の蓋を含む）[GO]。
