중간뇌는 발생 중인 척삭동물 뇌의 세 일차 구분 중 가운데 구분 또는 성체 뇌의 해당 부분이다(척추동물에서는 대뇌다리를 포함하는 배쪽 부분과, 네둔덕체를 포함하며 셋째뇌실과 넷째뇌실을 연결하는 실비우스수도관을 둘러싸는 등쪽 덮개를 포함한다)[GO].
