咬筋の筋膜および口角部の皮膚の筋膜に付着する顔面筋。この筋が存在する種においても、変異がきわめて大きい。真の笑筋はヒト族（ヒトおよび大型類人猿）にのみ存在する可能性がある。Diogo 2008; Diogo et al., 2009; Burrows et al.., 2011.を参照、またDuBrul, 1980も参照。
