脑室系统的一部分，形成位于菱脑中线的单个不规则形大腔，腹侧为延髓、脑桥和峡，背侧为小脑。它向前与中脑水管相延续，向后与脊髓中央管相延续。它经外侧孔和正中孔与蛛网膜下隙相通。
