관자엽에서 해마형성체의 앞에, 일부 종에서는 가쪽뇌실 관자뿔의 앞에 놓인 겉질밑 뇌 영역이다. 보통 여러 무리로 세분된다. 기능적으로는 단일 구조로 간주되지 않는다(MM).
